Hand Dyed Logs
There is so much controversy in the world of quilting between art and traditional quilting. I've actually witnessed people being downright rude to each other in regards to this controversy. Perhaps the same type of dissension occurs between abstract and realism painters? Anyhow, I love the funkiest most abstract and textural textile art that can be found AND I love log cabin quilts. Yesterday (after getting a loaner machine when my NEW sewing machine broke down - ugh) I started messing around with the fabric I had hand dyed on Saturday. I'm really liking this look of old with the new - it looks modern to me but in a very earthy, primitive way.

your hand dyes look great in these blocks! The visual texture you get from hand dyeing really enhances this "simple" block :-)
I haven't experienced the rude between traditional and art quilt, but can imagine it. Funny how we all get so defensive of what we do that we're prepared to hurt others in that process.... The best explaination I had of "the" difference was early on in my quilting when a wise woman told me the difference was in the motivation, not necessarily the process or end product. Art quilters are trying to capture and express an emotion, idea or other intangible; while traditional quilters are focusing on either the process or end product more than the underlaying communication desire... Works for me, as it means that what I see or experience the process to be with another quilter, doesn't preclude it being either art or traditional, whatever they think they're doing :-)
ma, your sewing machine BROKE? that stinks! its new, isn't it?
Those blocks are beautiful. Now I want to pull out all of my hand dyed (not by me) fabric and use it.
The argument between traditional and art is like bed quilt or wall quilt. For some it has to be a king size bed quilt or they think they are wasting their time. They think wallhangings are ridiculous. My walls are filled with wallhangings (art) and my beds are covered with bed quilts so there is room for everyone and it shouldn't be argued about. Like you said, it is fun to mix the old and new and not worry about what size it comes out, just play.
This is my favorite of all you have done! I absolutely agree with you about the old/new thing. I cannot wait to see it finished...:)
Blessings...
Amazing!!!! And peach pie?! I want to come over for dinner!
I have experienced this too the total disdain some art quilters have for the traditional quilters. I for one like both and really like when the two ends of the quilt world meet like in your Hand Dyed Logs. My traditional muse of late has been the Double Wedding Ring.
Your hand dyes are turning out great! Looks like you've been producing them for years. Beautiful.
